Speed bumps update

Updated: Mar 17, 2021

March Update

We have had no further comments which affect the proposal we set out in our last update. We will therefore install 2 speed bumps in the entrance to Emerald Square the location of which can be seen on the original picture. The timing now depends on contractors but hopefully this will be in the next 4-6 weeks. We will update on the size and look of the speed bumps in due course. Thank you to all who responded to the post.

January Update

At last night's Board meeting we reviewed the responses received by e mail and on the site. The post has had 36 unique visitors . 15 responses were received. 4 were for speed bumps, 5 against, 5 for 2 speed bumps in the entrance to the square and 1 neither against nor for.

In consequence, our current proposal is to instal 2 speed bumps in the entrance to the square as this is the longest stretch of road in the development where speeding might be reduced.

We will wait a further month to allow folks to respond to this specific proposal. We will then review all of the responses we have received before making a final decision to proceed at our February Board meeting.

Further Update

We have been asked about the timing of the decision on speed bumps (see the thread). Your Board meets on a monthly basis with the next meeting scheduled for the beginning of January. This will allow residents time to consider their position and either e mail us or leave comment on the web site about their preference. So far we have received 11 responses. Thank you to all those who have participated. We do encourage all residents to please give us their view.

Our intention is to review responses in our January Board meeting to guide us as to the next steps and to assist in shaping a formal consultation, if, indeed, it is decided to continue with the process.

Update

In view of comments and e mails received, we have decided to continue to look at the issue of speed bumps without a decision to proceed or not at this stage. Given the limited number of responses received, we would welcome the thoughts and ideas of all residents even if you have previously commented on one of the whatsapp groups or whether you support the proposal or not. Please do engage with either e mail, using the e mail address on the home page, or by leaving a comment here. There will be a further update at a later stage on the speed bump design options available to us.

Original Post

As you may be aware there have been a number of incidents of both anti social behaviour and speeding around the estate. This has been particularly so with delivery drivers who may not realise that the square is so frequently used by children playing throughout the square. We believe it is vital we address this situation before an accident occurs.

As such for the safety of all, we will be installing a small number of speed ramps around the Square to reduce the speed of vehicles around the square and make drivers aware of the need to observe the Square’s speed limit. The bumps will be placed between homes and will have gaps to allow cycles unimpeded access. The picture indicates the approximate site of the speed bumps.

Flower pots forcing a zig-zag path could also be a "friendlier" alternative to regular speed bumps, with the added benefit that they could easily be moved should a larger vehicle (moving van, fire engine etc) require access to the square. Seems we cannot attach images to comments but please check out these links for examples: https://bildix.mmcloud.se/bildix/api/images/OKZSyFTpBeIJcq7yrgOfnI_-x4M.jpeg?fit=crop&h=600&w=1200 https://bildix.mmcloud.se/bildix/api/images/c6608227-c6af-4db9-8c85-fa0d87a07517.jpeg?fit=crop&h=600&w=1200 https://www.hallsberg.se/images/18.15d8477d1612dfe9fa572bac/1582627884243/Bloml%C3%A5dor%20f%C3%B6r%20trafiks%C3%A4kerhet.jpg Our street is rather narrow so perhaps pots of this size would be suitable: https://bildix.mmcloud.se/bildix/api/images/FS8c6XWGKI89WT-x-Zlrbu-bFgs.jpeg?fit=crop&h=600&w=1200

Just to reiterate my previous comments, I think putting speed bumps in the Square itself will cause more angst and risk than they eliminate and should be avoided.

I would agree that speed bumps around the square next to the houses are a bit of an overkill.

Two speedbumps, one somewhere at the entrance to the etatate, and another at the entrance to the square would be sufficient.

Having six, four of which in the square, may be a little too much, and wouldn't serve the purpse they're needed for.

Majority or of the traffic is at the entrance to the estate, not at the back.

Also, speaking to my husband speeds bumps with children in the square on bikes, scooters etc will likely lead to more accidents rather than prevent them.

I’ll say again what I’ve already said. I do not want a speed bump outside my house.

If the bumps go ahead then I would like the location of the bumps re positioned so that people that are happy to have bumps outside their houses can do so.

What other options have been considered to tackle this issue?
